Ali Mahari: The Drive to Make a Better Life for His Family

His smile is as big as anyone else’s you will meet (the only exception being the smile on the faces of his kids).

And when we first met Ali Mahari, his wife Abeer and their three children two years ago, they had just arrived to their new home in Sacramento from Iraq. The family—now with a newborn as well—came to our community in pursuit of a better life for their children. “It was very hard to leave our home… to leave our family and everything we’ve ever known behind. But this is for them. This is for my children.”

That drive is evident in the ways the Mahari family not only raise their children, but in the way they teach and show gratitude for the support they receive from people all across Sacramento County. At Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS), the family participates in our Produce for All effort that ensures fresh fruit and vegetables reach families—especially those with growing kids. They have also received clothing and participated in our parent education classes.

“I am very grateful to know these people, and to offer a good life to my children,” Ali says. “I believe this goodness will be passed on by my children.”
